Husky Energy has won approval for its vast Sunrise oil sands project, as reported in an article appearing today through Reuters.
The Sunrise project could cost $10 billion and produce 200,000 barrels of bitumen a day.
As a SAGD project, steam will be injected into the reservoir to separate and extract the bitumen, allowing it to be pumped to the surface. Reserves are estimated at more than 10 billion barrels, with more than 3 billion reported as recoverable.
Husky's other advanced oil sands project, the Tucker development, is projected to begin pumping 30,000 barrels of bitumen a day in the next year.
